CVC word family -et

The -et word family gives early readers a focused way to practice short e. Words like jet, net, pet, and vet all keep the same ending while the first sound changes.

How to teach CVC -et words

Start with the shared ending. Say -et slowly, then add one beginning sound: j-et, n-et, p-et, v-et. Ask the learner to tap the first sound, the short e, and the final t before blending the word back together.

2. Say the word aloud.
3. Tap the three sounds.

Common -et word family mistakes

Students may mix short e with short i, especially when comparing words like pet and pit. Keep the mouth cue simple: short e is the sound in egg. Then return to the full word and read it as one smooth blend.
