CVC word family -ag

The -ag word family helps students keep practicing short a while they change the first sound. Words like bag, rag, and tag are short, concrete, and useful for early blending practice.

This lesson uses the same four -ag words across the games and printable worksheet. Students see the picture, say the word, notice the highlighted short a, and then read the full word again.

How to teach CVC -ag words

Start with the ending pattern. Say -ag, then add one beginning sound: b-ag, r-ag, t-ag. Ask the learner to tap the first sound, the middle short a, and the final g. Then blend the word back together.

For a quick routine:

1. Look at the picture.
2. Say the word aloud.
3. Tap the three sounds.
4. Point to the short a.
5. Read the full word.
6. Match the picture and word.

Common -ag word family mistakes

Students may confuse -ag with -at or -ap when they look only at the first two letters. Slow the routine down and ask them to listen for the final sound. Keep the middle vowel steady and compare bag, bat, and cap.

The highlighted vowel keeps attention on the short a sound without changing the spacing of the word. Students still see rag as one whole word, but the target sound is easy to notice.
